AIDS, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is a serious disease which reduces the body's ability to fight infection. A virus, HTLV-III, is thought to cause Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. The test for HTLV-III virus has a high probability of detecting previous exposure to this virus. However, this is not a test for the disease AIDS. There is no one laboratory test or symptom that is diagnostic of AIDS. The HTLV-III antibody test has not been fully evaluated and its interpretation and the significance of the results are not yet fully understood.
